Picturing the possibility of a New York Yankees-San Francisco Giants trade
With the New York Yankees reportedly looking for help in the outfield at the upcoming MLB trade deadline, could a deal with the San Francisco Giants possibly make sense?
Would the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees really pull of a deal that would be an outfielder from the Bay to the Bronx?
In an article for the New York Post, Joel Sherman wonders if the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants would be able to pull off a trade that would boost center field for the Yankees. Specifically, Sherman asks about the potential of the Yankees landing a left-handed bat that could not only make an impact at the plate, but also shore up New York’s defense as well.
With that in mind, Sherman asks about the possibility of the Giants trading Mike Yastrzemski or Steven Duggar to the Yankees. It’s a seemingly odd thought with the Giants entering Tuesday’s play just three games back in the National League West and certainly seen in the industry as a team that will be buying at the deadline rather than selling.
It’s also an interesting thought because … well … seeing a Yastrzemski in Yankee pinstripes might certainly cause quite the stir with New York’s bitter rivals in Boston.
All of that aside, however, the Giants won’t be looking for players like a mid-tier prospect who can help them down the road if they’re wanting to keep up this season with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West (and the rest of the postseason as well). On the surface, the trade simply doesn’t seem to make sense for the Giants, even if they will have some questions to answer about outfield playing time when Duggar returns from a left oblique strain.
And don’t even think about Joey Gallo being part of that potential San Francisco deal.
Sherman mentions the Giants possibility since a deal for a Bryan Reynolds (Pittsburgh Pirates) or Cedric Mullins (Baltimore Orioles) would come at a high cost for the Yankees.
While the Yankees will likely be looking for outfield help at the trade deadline, it won’t come from San Francisco, a team that will be building up its own ranks in a fight for the postseason.
