DENVER — San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado had to be helped from the field after an awkward play at first base in the first inning of Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Machado appeared to hit first base with his left foot and then slide off the base, going down in foul territory holding his lower left leg. He was eventually helped off the field and walked off trying to put weight on the leg, but was unable to put his full weight on it.

On Sunday, San Diego was finishing up a seven-day, seven-game road trip that included stops in Chicago and Colorado. Machado entered Sunday’s game with a four-game hitting streak, including a 2-for-4 night with a home run on Saturday in a loss to the Rockies, San Diego’s ninth straight defeat at Coors Field.
The home run on Saturday night was the team-leading 12th off the bat of Machado. He is also pacing the Padres with a .329 batting average coming into Sunday’s contest.
Over his last seven games, Machado is 12-for-30, hitting safely in six of those games and reaching base in all seven. Over his last four games, he has four multi-hit contests and has driven in nine runs.
For the season, Machado has reached base safely in 57 of his 65 games.

UPDATE: According to the Padres PR team, Machado has been diagnosed with a left ankle sprain and X-rays were negative. Further updates will come likely tomorrow.

Ryan Flaherty said Manny Machado is feeling “OK.” Machado was able to shift some of his weight as he felt himself slipping on the bag, so the damage could have been worse. No timetable yet. “All in all, as good as it could be,” Flaherty said.
