According to MLB insider Robert Murray of FanSided, signs are pointing toward a potential fit for Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras in a trade with the San Francisco Giants.
San Francisco Giants trade rumors: The Giants could be “the most logical fit” for Willson Contreras
In this article, Murray quotes one National League executive who says that “on the field,” the 30-year-old Contreras is certainly a fit for the San Francisco Giants, who will be battling the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres for not only supremacy in the NL West, but also potentially a Wild Card spot. Murray adds that “the most logical fit” for the Chicago Cubs to move Contreras would be to the Giants.
San Francisco has been trying to figure out its catcher position all season following the retirement of Buster Posey. The Giants are currently 14th among MLB teams with a minus-0.3 bWAR from its catching position. The Cubs, with Contreras leading the way, are second in baseball at 1.3 bWAR.
Part of San Francisco’s problems behind the plate this season have come from the disappointing stats put up by Joey Bart, who was slashing .156/.296/.300 before being optioned to Triple-A. In his article, Murray quotes former San Francisco beat writer and radio host Kerry Crowley as saying an interesting line about the future of Bart with the Giants.
"“I think it’s a much more realistic possibility right now than it ever was at last year’s trade deadline.”"
Could a trade of Contreras involve Bart as well? It will be an interesting development to watch as the Giants decide what the future behind the plate looks like without Posey.
In 39 career plate appearances at Oracle Park, Contreras is slashing .143/.231/.171 and does not have a home run or RBI. The Cubs are scheduled to make their only trip to San Francisco this season for a four-game series from July 28-31.
The Giants and Cubs pulled off a blockbuster trade last season with Kris Bryant heading to San Francisco. Could the two teams pull off another swap this season for another big Cubs name?
