The St. Louis Cardinals just keep finding ways to win.

They should not be if one looks at the roster. Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt are, as expected, leading the offense. However, Tommy Edman is the only other part of what had been the Opening Day lineup to truly be productive. Miles Mikolas and the ageless Adam Wainwright have been the Cardinals’ best starters while the rest of the rotation has battled injuries. And yet, they are atop the NL Central and seemingly in the driver’s seat for a playoff berth.

Three potential trade targets for St. Louis Cardinals

Clearly, the Cardinals have room for improvement. There is a little extra motivation this year, as it is likely that Wainwright, Yadier Molina, and Albert Pujols are all in the final seasons of their impressive careers. It would be fitting to send them off with one final playoff appearance, or possibly, a championship.

The St. Louis Cardinals keep finding ways to win despite the holes on their roster. Let’s take a look at three trade targets to help them reach the playoffs.

Adam Frazier

The St. Louis Cardinals have a giant hole in the middle of their infield.

Shortstop has been a complete disaster. Paul DeJong was horrendous enough to be sent to Triple-A after the Cardinals eschewed targeting the position in the offseason in the hope that he could find his form. Edmundo Sosa cannot hit. Tommy Edman has moved from second to short while Brendan Donovan keeps moving around the diamond.

The Cardinals clearly need something in the middle of the infield. While shortstop would seem to be the obvious option, the Cardinals could look for a second baseman instead. That may be the easier, and better option, especially if Adam Frazier ends up on the trade block.

While the Mariners have disappointed, they had also coveted Frazier for years. It is not a certainty that he would be made available. However, Jerry Dipoto is seemingly willing to trade anyone at any time. As Frazier is slated to be a free agent after this season, and has disappointed in his own right, the Mariners could look to bring something back for him before he tests the open market.

The St. Louis Cardinals need to upgrade their lineup, especially in the middle of their infield. Adam Frazier would be another solid professional hitter with a solid track record.
