There was a time when Dellin Betances was one of the top setup men in the league. While he never ended up as the replacement when Mariano Rivera retired, he was a four time All Star and a dominant part of the Yankees bullpen in the 2010s. Now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, those days are far in the past.

But players that had a great deal of success in the past are worth a chance. Such is the case with Betances, who has been assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City after spending the past two months in Arizona.

Dellin Betances getting another chance with Los Angeles Dodgers

Betances had been a force of nature with the Yankees. He posted a 2.36 ERA and a 1.043 WHiP in his 381.2 innings in the Bronx, striking out 621 batters with 170 walks. However, he missed most of the 2019 season with shoulder issues, making one appearance before tearing his Achilles, leaving the Yankees to send him into free agency.

Somehow, despite those injury woes, he landed a one year deal worth $7.5 million that included a player option for $6 million in 2021. That contract turned out to be a disaster as he made a grand total of 16 appearances, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits and 13 walks over his 12.2 innings.

At this point, it is fair to wonder what, if anything, he has left. Betances was not exactly close to decent in the Arizona Complex League, allowing three runs on six hits in his 3.2 innings. However, he did strike out seven batters without issuing a walk, giving the Dodgers something to hang their hats on.

There is no harm in seeing if Betances can handle Triple-A. It is just a minor league deal, and if he struggles, they can move on without any damage to the bottom line. Betances is a lottery ticket, and one that could pay off bigger than imagined.

Next. No reason to worry about Kimbrel - yet. dark

Dellin Betances joined the Los Angeles Dodgers Triple-A team on Tuesday. It is worth the time to see if he can recapture his All Star caliber form.
