The San Francisco Giants were a nice story last year. They came out of nowhere with a collection of misfit parts to win 107 games and earn the NL West title. While they were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs, it was still an impressive run through the regular season.

However, that was last year. The Giants were supposed to fade back into the pack, a forgotten team with the Dodgers and Padres fighting for the division. The problem is that no one told the Giants who, despite being in third, are well within striking distance.

Three trade targets for San Francisco Giants

It is going to take work to catch the Dodgers and Padres. The Giants need help in their lineup and in the bullpen. However, if there is a team that can make seemingly undervalued pieces and turn them into assets, it would be the Giants. Their trade deadline may not be exciting, but they should get exactly what they need.

The San Francisco Giants are serving notice that they are not going away. Let’s take a look at three potential targets heading towards the trade deadline.

Willson Conteras

Plenty of teams are going to be after Willson Contreras. The San Francisco Giants may need him more than any other contender.

A black hole had developed behind the plate when Buster Posey decided that it was time to hang up the cleats. In theory, Joey Bart was supposed to fill that void as he had been one of the top rated catching prospects in the game. However, he had not done anything at the major league level prior to 2022.

That is still the case. Bart has continued to struggle, leading to his being sent back to Triple-A. Meanwhile, this leaves the Giants looking for an answer behind the plate, at least for the rest of the season.

Another call to the Cubs may be in order. They shocked the baseball universe when they landed Kris Bryant at the deadline last year. This year, Contreras needs to be at the top of their list in order to solidify their lineup. His power bat would add another dimension to a solid, but relatively average, offense. Contreras could make the difference between the Giants attempting to hold on to a Wild Card spot or making a push for the NL West.

Catcher has been a giant hole for the San Francisco Giants all year. Adding Willson Contreras would make a major difference.
