Michael Fulmer

In theory, Michael Fulmer is the Tigers’ second option to close and would seemingly get the job if Gregory Soto falters.

However, the Tigers may be better off using him as trade bait. Their expected return to contention this year simply did not happen, and with Fulmer slated to enter free agency after this season, it is time to put him on the trade block. As he has experience as a closer and has been a strong option as a setup man, Fulmer could fetch a solid return.

He is also the type of pitcher that the Giants should be looking at. While Camilo Doval has been solid in the closer role, their backup option has not. Jake McGee has a 6.87 ERA and just ten strikeouts in his 18.1 innings, hardly the type of production one would want from a key late inning reliever.

Fulmer has been solid in his first full season in the bullpen, posting a 2.16 ERA and a 0.920 WHiP over 25 innings, striking out 26 batters with 11 walks. While his command may be a bit concerning, he has held the opposition to a .140/.242/.209 batting line in 99 plate appearances. He may be flying somewhat under the radar as a trade candidate, but Fulmer could be a valuable piece over the final few months of the season.

The San Francisco Giants need to add some pieces to their bullpen. Michael Fulmer could be the type of pitcher that makes an unexpected impact.
