Results matter in every profession. One is not going to stay employed if they do not produce at a reasonable rate, nor will they get chances if there is a history of failure. This is apparently news to Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa.

See, La Russa does not believe in looking at the results. As he explained after the White Sox 4-1 loss to the Angels, “it’s too easy that way.” And so, because he is watching Leury Garcia’s at bats and is clearly seeing something that no one else can, the light hitting infielder had his chance with runners at the corners and two out with the White Sox trailing. Predictably, he grounded out.

Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa better start caring about results

But he drew a walk in the third inning! And Garcia fouled off tough pitches and made contact! It was a great at bat! You know, except for the results, which according to La Russa, do not matter. At least it explains why he continues to send out someone with a 38 OPS+ and a -0.6 bWAR out to second base every day.

It shows an interesting set of priorities for La Russa. The unwritten rules of the game matter so much to him that he ruined Yermin Mercedes’ confidence and ran him out of town. Results? Bah! That does not matter so much to La Russa.

The problem is that, at some point in time, one has to look at the results. Such is the case with the White Sox as they sit in third place in the AL Central with a disappointing 35-39 record. They may have battled injuries, but there is no question that the White Sox have been a major disappointment considering the talent they have.

La Russa is a Hall of Fame manager. He has taken six teams to the World Series, winning three championships. One would think that he knows that results have to matter. Instead, this is another case where he is attempting to justify his asinine logic and claiming to be the smartest person in the room. Eventually, that will lead to his being thrown out of that room as the White Sox bring someone in that the game has not passed by.
