The Miami Marlins pitching depth may be the envy of every team in the majors. Not only do they have an impressive major league rotation, but their crop of pitching prospects is amongst the best in the game. Even if they do trade from their depth to improve their lineup going forward, the Marlins will have plenty of talent to come.

Eury Perez may be the best of that crop of players. While he is not considered the Marlins top pitching prospect just yet, it is difficult to argue with his performance. Although he is just 19 years old, he has posted a 3.35 ERA and a 0.922 WHiP in his 51 innings, striking out 69 batters with just 11 walks.

Miami Marlins have burgeoning star in Eury Perez

Those numbers only tell part of the story for Perez. He leads all Double-A pitchers in K/9 (12.2), strikeout percentage (34.2%), BB/9 (1.9), walk percentage (5.4%), and K/BB (6.3). Perez also happens to be the youngest player in Double-A. He would also be the youngest player High-A as well.

Perez had been well regarded before this season. He was a consensus top 100 prospect, a pitcher with the potential for three plus offerings, as well as a fastball and command that was expected to develop into plus-plus territory. He has added another two to three MPH to his fastball this season as the pitch now sits in the 96 MPH to 98 MPH range.

Prospect hounds are not the only ones that have been signing Perez’s praises. Marlins reporter Craig Mish, who has been around the team since it first started, feels that Perez could be the best pitching prospect the Marlins ever had. Considering some of the arms that have come through that organization, it is high praise indeed.

It would not be a surprise to Perez move up to Triple-A in the near future. He has almost nothing left to prove at Double-A and it will be tempting to see how he fares at the highest level of the minors. Should his dominating ways continue, a September promotion may not be out of the realm of possibility.
