Anthony DeSclafani was another success story for the San Francisco Giants. He was yet another of their reclamation projects, having bounced back from a disastrous 2020 campaign to help lead the Giants to the best record in baseball. It made sense to bring him back as he signed a three year deal worth $36 million.
The first year of that contract has been a disaster. DeSclafani had spent two months on the Injured List due to ankle woes before being activated two weeks ago. He is back on the IL again, lost for the season as he will undergo surgery to set a tendon in his right ankle back into place.
San Francisco Giants hoping for Anthony DeSclafani rebound in 2023
There is no hiding the fact that 2022 was a complete disaster for DeSclafani. He posted a 9.95 ERA and a 2.053 WHiP in his 19 innings, allowing 35 hits despite issuing just four walks and striking out 17 batters.
It was a far cry from the performance that the Giants received from DeSclafani in 2021. He was yet another success story for the franchise, posting a 3.17 ERA and a 1.091 WHiP in his 167.2 innings, striking out 152 batters with 42 walks. It was a career year, and one that made his contract with the Giants appear to be a bargain.
At this point, the Giants have to just write off the 2022 season. The focus now is to get DeSclafani health and ready to contribute once more in 2023. At that point, they will see if their ability to get the best out of virtually every one of their reclamation projects can continue and he can recapture that form next year.
Anthony DeSclafani has been a disaster for the San Francisco Giants this year. He has to put this year behind him and look ahead to a healthy 2023.
