Just when it seems as though nothing surprises with Shohei Ohtani any longer, the Los Angeles Angels star finds another way to impress.

Such is the case with runners in scoring position. As pointed out by Jeremy Frank on Twitter, Ohtani has the highest slugging percentage with runners in scoring position in the past 50 years with a minimum of 400 plate appearances, slugging at a .621 clip.

There may never be another player such as Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani

He has been equally impressive on the mound with runners in scoring position. Ohtani has allowed the lowest slugging percentage allowed with runners in scoring position over the past 50 years and a minimum of 200 batters faced, holding the opposition to .201 rate.

It is astonishing to think about when one looks at all of the great players to have been in the game over the past 50 years. Not only is Ohtani surpassing all of those legends of the game, but he has done so both in the batter’s box and on the mound. To further that impressive performance, he also has allowed just two runs, one earned, in his last 33.2 innings.

Ohtani proved that he could be great as both a hitter and a pitcher last year, winning the AL MVP while starting the All Star Game on the mound. His ability to excel on both sides should lead to plenty more hardware over the course of his major league career.

It also underscores the fact that we may never see another player such as Ohtani. It has been generations since Martin Dihigo has roamed the diamond, impressing in the batter’s box and on the mound. Ohtani is the ultimate unicorn and may well be the last of his kind.
