Boston Red Sox rumors: Trade deadline path not yet determined
On paper, the Boston Red Sox would be buyers at the trade deadline. They enter Sunday’s slate of action with one of the Wild Card spots, and at 46-39, would seemingly control their own destiny. Injuries have depleted their pitching staff, but as some of those arms come back, the Red Sox should be able to solidify their place in the postseason hunt on the trade market.
The reality is not as set in stone. The Red Sox are in the midst of their most difficult part of the schedule as every team they face from now until August 4th is a postseason contender. Two victories in their first six games in that stretch do not exactly bode well for their ability to hold on to that Wild Card spot.
Boston Red Sox approaching trade deadline from reality
It is something that the Red Sox are well aware of as well. According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox are currently considered “cautious buyers” at this point. But that could change very quickly, especially as eight teams are all clustered within five games of the first Wild Card.
The Red Sox do have some intriguing pieces if they end up selling. Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Wacha, and Enrique Hernandez are all on expiring contracts and could bring back significant returns. At the same time, there are clear holes on the roster if the Red Sox end up buying, as the bullpen, outfield, and first base could all be targeted for improvement.
That path will be determined in the next few weeks. The Red Sox may need to work to line up deals as both a buyer and a seller in the coming weeks before deciding which path to pursue. It may not be an answer that they know until the calendar flips to August.
The Boston Red Sox are currently considered to be cautious buyers. That status could easily change in the coming days as they run the gauntlet.
