The Joey Gallo Era has been a disaster for the New York Yankees. The former two time All Star just has not been the same player since he was traded to New York as he has been one of the bigger disappointments in recent history. It is not a surprise that the Yankees have been looking to trade him away as those rumors had circulated since before the lockout.
One of those potential trade destinations is a surprise. According to Jon Heyman and Dan Martin of the New York Post, the Rangers could be a possible landing spot for Gallo.
New York Yankees could check return policy on Joey Gallo
The Rangers would clearly look to bring him back at a discount compared to their return at the deadline last year. As he has produced a miserable .666 OPS with 23 homers and 11 doubles in his 468 plate appearances with the Yankees heading into Sunday, he could end up being a possible bargain.
While a homecoming could benefit Gallo, the Rangers would seem to be a strange trade partner for his services. Although they are on the periphery of the playoff hunt, they are also just starting to come out of their rebuilding process. Adding a player with more team control than Gallo, who is an impending free agent, would make sense.
However, the Rangers’ outfield has not exactly lit the baseball work afire. Brad Miller has a 74 OPS+ as their most frequent left fielder. Kole Calhoun has been better but is still a tick below average. Gallo could, if he can rediscover his form, be an improvement.
In the end, it will come down to cost. The Rangers are not going to mortgage their future to bring Gallo back. While the Yankees are likely desperate to be rid of him since they are shopping for their own outfield upgrades, they are likely to want something more than cash considerations. That may well be the sticking point in a homecoming this year.
The New York Yankees are looking to move Joey Gallo somewhere. A homecoming with the Texas Rangers could end up being in the cards.
