Los Angeles Dodgers concession workers could impact All Star Game
Instead of being a celebration of baseball, the MLB All Star Game could highlight the labor issues between concessions workers and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Unite Here Local 11, the union that represents concession workers at Dodger Stadium, announced that 99% of their members voted to go on strike and that such a work stoppage could happen at any moment. While the Dodgers are currently on the road, such a strike could impact the All Star Futures game, Home Run Derby, and All Star Game itself.
Los Angeles Dodgers concession workers could leave MLBPA in tough spot
The exact demands of the union have not been disclosed. However, they have stated that they are looking to negotiate a “fair new union contract” for their workers. To do that, the union may need to hit the Dodgers and Major League Baseball right where it hurts by walking out ahead of the All Star Game.
Should a strike happen, this would put the MLBPA in a difficult spot. They wanted support during the MLB labor stoppage this past offseason, calling for solidarity amongst various unions. Participating in All Star Weekend during a strike would be a terrible look going forward.
It could also erode the MLBPA’s ability to rally other unions to their cause. They would have stepped over that line, making certain that the game goes on despite the strike. While the Future’s Game likely would not be impacted as minor leaguers are not part of the union, even having that contest would not be a good look.
In the end, it comes down to when Unite Here Local 11 decides to walk out. If the Dodgers refuse to negotiate in good faith, they could be hit far harder in their pocketbook than they would have expected.
The Los Angeles Dodgers could be facing a strike from their concession workers. If that happens, the All Star Game could be impacted as well.
