Chicago White Sox: Wrong disappointing team fired manager
It is not a surprise that another team that has disappointed this season has fired their manager. What is a surprise is that it was not the Chicago White Sox.
Instead, it was the Toronto Blue Jays who axed their manager. According to Ken Rosenthal, Charlie Montoyo has been fired, with Jeff Passan noting that bad losses and questions about his leadership in the clubhouse led to this move.
Chicago White Sox need to take page from Toronto Blue Jays
And then there are the White Sox with Tony La Russa. The Hall of Fame manager is essentially that gif of the small child giving something the side eye and then looking elsewhere. If bad losses, questionable moves, and losing the clubhouse are grounds for firing, then La Russa is a dead man walking.
At least, he should be. The White Sox have been one of the biggest disappointments in the majors this season, a team that was expected to run off with the AL Central but is in third place only due to the incompetence of the Tigers and Royals.
But none of that has mattered. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf still looks at La Russa as though he is a love struck teenager. That continued insistence of living in the past and refusal to recognize that the game has passed La Russa by has doomed the White Sox to a sub .500 record. At least the Blue Jays were still in a playoff berth when Montoyo was fired.
The Blue Jays and White Sox are in similar spots. Both teams not only had playoff aspirations heading into the 2022 season but were anticipating a long run in the postseason. Both those hopes were in question at this point in the season. At least the Blue Jays did something. Now it is up to the White Sox to get the hint and join other disappointing teams in trying to spark their roster into living up to its potential.
The Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox have disappointed this season. At least one team had the resolve to fire their manager.
