Kansas City Royals: Drew Waters harbinger of outfield trades
Andrew Benintendi was the easy answer if the Kansas City Royals were going to trade an outfielder. While they had previously discussed attempting to extend him, Benintendi would also be one of the top outfielders available. Teams have already been in contact with the Royals regarding his services, making a trade likely.
The same could be said about Michael Taylor. The Royals had signed him to a two year extension through 2023, a move that seems ingenious as he is in the midst of a career season. While the Royals had resisted the idea of trading him thus far, that could change with the arrival of Drew Waters.
Drew Waters could change Kansas City Royals plans
General manager J.J. Picollo had been clear about the Royals’ thoughts about Waters moving forward. He stated that they regard Waters as a plus defender and a “true center fielder” and had been enamored with his speed. That profile essentially matches what Taylor had been, although Waters would be cheaper and have more potential at this stage of his career.
This potentially allows the Royals to take advantage of the market. There are few center fielders available and multiple teams are looking for an upgrade at the position. Taylor may be in high demand due to his affordable contract and a lack of players available at the position.
Taylor has picked a perfect time for what could be a career year. The 2021 Gold Glove winner in center has posted a solid 105 OPS+ with five homers and six doubles in his 236 plate appearances entering Tuesday, drawing 24 walks with 56 strikeouts. Both his walk and strikeout rates are career bests at this juncture.
If there was ever a moment where the Royals could sell high on Taylor, this is it. His solid performance thus far, affordable contract for 2023, and the lack of center field options could lead to a surprising return. Waters’ presence could make this possible.
Drew Waters may have changed the Kansas City Royals’ plans at the trade deadline. Michael Taylor could find himself on the trade block.
