The only thing that could stop the Seattle Mariners winning streak was the Major League Baseball schedule.

Back on June 19, the Mariners were ten games under .500. Since then, they have 22-3 record, moving to nine games over .500 in just 28 days. Their 14 consecutive wins is the longest streak of any team in MLB history heading into the break, shattering the record held by the 1935 Tigers and the 1975 Reds. As ESPN Stats and Info noted on Twitter, both of those teams won the World Series in those years.

Seattle Mariners hoping streak a sign that playoff drought will end

At this point, the Mariners would settle for reaching the postseason. They have not done so since 2001, when their record tying 116 win team was bounced out of the playoffs by the Yankees. They have been close, but still hold the longest current playoff drought in the majors.

If the season ended right now, that run would be over. The Mariners have barrelled up the standings and currently hold the second Wild Card spot, just a half game behind the Rays for the top Wild Card seed and a postseason series at home. However, there are six teams within 4.5 games of their spot in the standings, so they should not be printing playoff tickets just yet.

The Mariners are also in for a tough test right after the break. Seven of their next ten games are against the Astros, a team that is nine games ahead in the standings. Taking at least four of those games would cement their place as a viable contender.

It will also be interesting to see how the break impacts the Mariners going forward. They will have four days until their first series against Houston, slowing the momentum they currently possess. That may be the most difficult challenge that they face – finding a way to keep this momentum going when the games begin again.
