The New York Mets have been looking for depth options in various areas around their roster. Fortunately, the Pittsburgh Pirates are there to help.

That has certainly been the case over the past 24 hours. During that time, the Mets made a pair of deals with the Pirates, adding some bench pieces as they look to supplement the lineup.

New York Mets turning to Pittsburgh PIrates for help

The first deal came together early Friday evening. The Mets acquired first baseman Daniel Vogelbach, sending reliever Colin Holderman to Pittsburgh. As the Mets are looking to upgrade their designated hitter position, adding Vogelbach’s 117 OPS+ and 12 homers over 278 plate appearances would do just that. However, giving up a reliever with a 2.04 ERA and a 1.019 WHiP over 17.2 innings when they are also looking for bullpen help is a steep price.

The second piece was acquired early Saturday afternoon. Michael Perez had been designated for assignment on Friday before being sent to the Mets. In exchange, the Pirates received the ever popular Cash Considerations.

Perez is essentially a short term depth option. Tomas Nido may need to spend time on the Injured List due to his bruised hand. In that case, Perez would be able to team up with Patrick Mazeika behind the plate. Additionally, once the Mets get their catchers back, Perez has options remaining and can be sent to Triple-A.

Neither of these moves are really going to move the needle or change the Mets’ plans. They are still looking to add pieces to their lineup, especially as Vogelbach does not have a track record of sustained success. Likewise, sending Holderman to Pittsburgh may add some urgency to their quest to add help in the bullpen.
