Trade rumors are beginning to swirl around the Boston Red Sox. However, do not expect two of their biggest names to end up on the trade block.
According to Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy during an interview on WEEI, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers are not on the trade block. In fact, he even said that “there’s been no discussion or communication internally or externally” regarding trading either player.
Boston Red Sox not trading Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers
It is fair to speculate as to whether or not either player would be on the trade block. Bogaerts has an opt-out at the end of this season and seems likely to exercise that option. Meanwhile, the two sides are reportedly far away from an extension. Bogaerts also has a no-trade clause that makes any possible deal much more complicated.
Devers is in a similar situation. While he is under team control through next season, he and the Red Sox have very different ideas as to what he would be worth in terms of an extension. The Red Sox feel as though Matt Olson is a fair comparison, something that Devers finds laughable.
Perhaps the Red Sox feel as though these differences can be worked out. They could also feel that, despite sitting at .500 and failing to win a series against an AL East opponent at this time, they can go on a run and reach the postseason. It is not entirely improbable
This could also be something as simple as the Red Sox not quite knowing which direction they will go in at the deadline. Despite having a week left, they remain at a crossroads. Even if they do decide to sell, there may not be enough time to figure out a deal for either player.
The Boston Red Sox do not have any intentions of trading Xander Bogaerts or Rafael Devers. At least two pieces are staying put at the deadline.
