There is absolutely no question that New York Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo has struggled this season. While his overall statistics are miserable, they look even worse when compared to other players.

Gallo really does not need much help to look bad statistically. He has posted a disappointing 80 OPS+ this year, hitting just 12 homers and four doubles in his 270 plate appearances this year. It is a continuation of his miserable performance since joining the Yankees.

But even that does not tell the complete story. A comparative look at Gallo’s performance shows just how unplayable he has been this year. For example, Gallo has 37 hits on the year entering Wednesday. Aaron Judge, meanwhile, has hit 38 homers.

Hits are not the only interesting stat. While Gallo has managed to do more than drive him just himself or Josh Donaldson (back when he had five homers and seven RBI for the year), he has just 24 RBI on the season. Oneil Cruz, who has just 119 plate appearances entering Wednesday and plays for a worse team in the Pirates, has 21 RBI thus far. And he spent a large portion in the season in the minors.

Let’s go back to that 80 OPS+ thus far. Here is a partial list of the players who have a higher OPS+ than Gallo this season: Javy Baez, Joey Bart (who was banished to Triple-A), Rougned Odor, Kevin Kiermaier’s corpse, Jace Pederson, Thairo Estrada, Jesus Sanchez, and Elvis Andrus. This is not exactly a list of players that would constitute a modern day Murderer’s Row.

And yet, some team may be willing to take a chance on Gallo. He clearly needs to be somewhere else as the Yankees experiment has not worked. At the same time, it would not cost much to bring him on board, with whichever team hoping they can catch lightning in a bottle for the final two months of the season.
