Detroit Tigers find yet another starting pitcher this year
This was supposed to be the year that the Detroit Tigers‘ rebuild came to an end. Instead, they find themselves as 40-60 entering Friday’s slate of action as disappointing performances and an incredible run of injuries have made them sellers once again. For all of the promise of 2022, it has become just another miserable year.
Those injuries are particularly notable on the pitching side. Nine pitchers that have started a game for the Tigers this year are on the Injured List. A tenth, Eduardo Rodriguez, left the team due to personal issues. The starting rotation has been a revolving door at best this year.
Bryan Garcia the next contestant for Detroit Tigers’ rotation
That does not appear as though it will end any time soon. Yet another pitcher is getting a start in Detroit, as Bryan Garcia will make his 2022 debut on Friday. As pointed out by Jason Beck at MLB.com, Garcia is now the 15th different starter that the Tigers have used this year.
Garcia had spent time with the Tigers from 2019 through 2021. He served as a reliever in that time posting a 6.12 ERA and a 1.700 WHiP over his 72 appearances, striking out 51 batters with 40 walks. He also had not started a game in his professional career until July 10, with his last three outings as a starter.
Even if Garcia pitches well, three or four innings may be the best that the Tigers can hope for. He has not thrown more than 54 pitches in any outing thus far and has not had much time to build up his pitch count. At this point, the Tigers would take 60 pitches so long as Garcia can be even somewhat competent.
Chances are, he will not be the last pitcher to make a start for the Tigers this year. Their unbelievably bad luck when it comes to keeping pitchers healthy is not likely to end this year. Garcia will be the 15th different starting pitcher for the Tigers; it is just a matter until the 16th takes the mound.
Bryan Garcia – come on down! You’re the next contestant as the Detroit Tigers look to find someone that can be a part of the 2022 rotation.
