It is no secret that the New York Mets are regarding the Chicago Cubs as a potential trade partner. With the likes of Willson Contreras and David Robertson available, both of which would help the Mets chances, they would seem to be a perfect pairing. The problem is that both of those players are needed by other teams as well which could push the cost beyond the Mets’ comfort level.

With that being the case, it pays to have a backup plan. The Mets are setting that up as Ken Rosenthal reported that they had scouts on hand to watch the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

Rosenthal further added that the Mets are eyeing J.D. Martinez and Christian Vazquez, looking at them in case the asking price for Contreras and/or Robertson goes beyond their comfort level. At the same time, the Mets could easily look to make separate deals involving both teams to get whatever piece they need.

Martinez would fit in their quest to upgrade at the designated hitter spot. While the Mets did acquire Daniel Vogelbach recently, he would hardly be a roadblock to their acquiring a better piece. Martinez would not only provide that upgrade they are looking for from their DH, but he would also be a solid enough backup plan at either outfielder corner.

There has not been much chatter about Vazquez, but it would make sense for the Red Sox to listen on him if they were to sell. He is also slated to be a free agent at the end of the season, a solid defensive player who can provide above average offense. His 104 OPS+ with eight homers and 18 doubles in his 305 plate appearances this season would be an upgrade in the Mets’ lineup.

This is also the time to figure out backup plans. Deals can happen in an instant, especially with all the conversations that have taken place over the past few days. Being able to pivot to another trade quickly could make the difference in whether or not that upgrade is brought in.
