For the San Francisco Giants, a 2-8 stretch over their last 10 games and seeing what the Cincinnati Reds got in a return from the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Luis Castillo has the Giants listening to trade offers on “pretty much anyone” with the exception of pitcher Logan Webb.

San Francisco Giants trade rumors: Selling at the MLB trade deadline sounds like a real possibility

According to Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of The New York Post, the San Francisco Giants have officially switched from an unknown commodity as the MLB trade deadline approaches to the role of sellers. The duo says in tweets that the Giants are “open for pretty much anyone not Logan Webb on roster” and the team is “now listening on their veterans.”

Two of the veteran possibilities to move at the MLB trade deadline are starting pitcher Carlos Rodón and outfielder Joc Pederson.

Rodón has an opt-out after this season, a clause that was triggered after he pitched 110 innings for the Giants this year. With a $21.5 million salary this season, Rodón is scheduled to make $22.5 million next season but with a National League-leading 2.42 FIP along with a 3.18 ERA and 1.121 WHIP, it’s clear that the 29-year-old southpaw could well be a hot commodity at the trade deadline and in the offseason as well (should he exercise his opt-out).

With the Reds getting a haul of talented prospects from the Mariners in exchange for Castillo, San Francisco’s eyes may well have been opened to what the franchise could receive (to a lesser degree) in a Rodón trade.

Could a reunion in Atlanta be a possibility for Pederson, with the Braves needing an outfielder and Pederson making a big impact for the club on the way to their World Series win last season? Pederson signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Giants this offseason, so he will be a free agent at the conclusion of the season, making him an interesting trade chip.

Next. Bruce Bochy back for one last rodeo. dark

With the San Francisco Giants just 4.0 games out of a National League Wild Card spot heading into Sunday’s action, the move to seller may come as a bit of a surprise to some. However, San Francisco’s aging roster and playing in the same division as the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres (both teams that are expected to upgrade at the MLB trade deadline) makes this a time for the defending NL West champions to look to the future and listen to offers on some of their veteran players.
