Toronto Blue Jays trade rumors: Michael Fulmer eyed for bullpen help
The Toronto Blue Jays are looking for help in their bullpen for the later innings. An answer may be across the diamond this weekend.
According to Jon Morosi, the Blue Jays are amongst the teams eyeing Tigers’ reliever Michael Fulmer. It just so happens that the Blue Jays and Tigers are facing each other this weekend, with Fulmer having fired a scoreless inning on Friday.
Toronto Blue Jays may not have to look far for bullpen help
As a whole, the Blue Jays bullpen has been relatively solid, posting a 3.93 ERA in their 375.1 innings entering Saturday. However, there has been some inconsistency in their relief corps, while the likes of Trevor Richards have not lived up to expectations. The Blue Jays have had 22 different relievers this season as they have looked to find the right mix to bridge the gap to closer Jordan Romano.
Fulmer could be that piece. The former AL Rookie of the Year and All Star pitcher has rejuvenated his career as a reliever. That has continued this season as he has posted a 2.77 ERA and a 1.154 WHiP in his 39 innings entering Saturday, striking out 38 batters with 20 walks.
He also has some experience in the ninth inning, Fulmer ended up in a co-closer role with the Tigers last season, notching a dozen saves. While he only has a pair of saves this season, he is the preferred option when Gregory Soto has not been available.
The Blue Jays are going to have plenty of competition for his services. Numerous teams are in desperate need of bullpen help, with several contenders having far more holes in their relief corps. However, right now, the Blue Jays can offer something that those teams cannot – having Fulmer just walk to the other locker room instead of having to fly elsewhere.
The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to add another reliever to their late inning mix. Help could be across the diamond in the form of Michael Fulmer.
