As the MLB trade deadline approached, it was clear that the bullpen was an area of need for the New York Yankees. On Monday, the Yankees strengthened their bullpen by adding Scott Effross in a deal with the Chicago Cubs.

New York Yankees make a trade with the Chicago Cubs, adding reliever Scott Effross to boost the bullpen before the MLB trade deadline

The 28-year-old Effross has posted a 2.66 ERA/2.19 FIP/1.068 WHIP this season in 44.0 innings spanning 47 games, helping him to an ERA+ of 158. Effross made his MLB debut last season on August 29 and is still considered a rookie this season, meaning he comes to the New York Yankees with five years of club control left.

As was mentioned by ESPN’s Jeff Passan earlier on Monday, short-term relief pitching is at a premium at this MLB trade deadline, so it’s no surprise that a team like the Yankees is willing to spend a little more in terms of a return in order to acquire a pitcher like the right-handed Effross, who can be a part of their plans for years to come rather than just being a rental.

In exchange for Effross, the Yankees are reportedly sending their seventh-ranked prospect, right-hander Hayden Wesneski, to the Cubs. The 24-year-old Wesneski was at Triple-A with the Yankees and had a 3.51 ERA in 19 starts covering 89.2 innings. Last season, he progressed all the way from High-A to Triple-A.

Here are some statistics to know about Effross, a 15th-round selection of the Cubs in the 2015 MLB draft, and what he brings to the mound.

The Yankees and Cubs making deals that benefit those in the Bronx is becoming a common theme, with New York grabbing Anthony Rizzo before last season’s MLB trade deadline and Cubs top prospect Gleyber Torres going to New York in 2016 in exchange for Aroldis Chapman, who is now once again with the Yanks.

All eyes continue to be on general manager Brian Cashman for more deals that can help New York return to the World Series for the first time since 2009.
