Yankees rumors: Gleyber Torres was discussed in Soto, Hader potential trades
The New York Yankees shocked their fan base on Tuesday as the franchise dealt off starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals just before the MLB trade deadline. It also seems that the Yankees were ready to make another roster-shaking move involving Gleyber Torres had a trade package for Juan Soto or Josh Hader come to fruition.
New York Yankees rumors: Gleyber Torres was brought up in trade talks for Juan Soto and Josh Hader
According to published reports, the New York Yankees were in discussions with the Washington Nationals for a potential Juan Soto trade as well as the Milwaukee Brewers for a potential Josh Hader trade. The Yankees, as it turns out, acquired neither player, with the San Diego Padres landing both in separate deals.
However, part of the discussions with both the Brewers and Nationals involved to some degree Gleyber Torres being a part of the trade package coming from the Bronx.
The 25-year-old Torres is having a solid season for the Yankees, slashing .257/.312/.466 with 16 home runs and 46 RBI. It’s quite the rebound after two disappointing seasons that followed a pair of All-Star Game appearances in his first two MLB seasons.
Torres was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 trade that brought Aroldis Chapman to the Windy City and helped the Cubs secure their first World Series title in a century. However, after his first two seasons in pinstripes, Torres has been a lightning rod for fans and potential trade options have swirled around him, even before this MLB trade deadline.
Could the Yankees have been thinking that the value for Torres would never be higher than now, fearing a return to what has been seen at the plate over the last two seasons? Possibly, and knowing Torres is still under team control until the 2025 campaign is certainly a plus for potential trade partners as well.
For now, Gleyber Torres is a part of the New York Yankees as they try to return to the World Series for the first time since 2009. However, it’s clear that the Yankees would have been willing to move him should discussions involving a package for a high-impact player had gone further.
