The writing is on the wall for Robinson Cano. After being designated for assignment, and subsequently released, by the Atlanta Braves, it is fair to wonder if he has anything left. Retirement may well be staring Cano in the face.
But he is not ready to hang up the cleats just yet. When the Braves announced that Cano was released, they also stated that he chose to head back into free agency as he looks to latch on to yet another team.
Atlanta Braves may not be Robinson Cano’s last act
As it was, the Braves were Cano’s third team of the season, having spent time with the Mets and Padres (twice) previously. In that time, he has produced a .150/.183/.190 batting line in his 104 plate appearances, hitting a home run and a double.
Cano was more productive in Triple-A this season. He produced a .333/.375/.479 batting line with three homers and five doubles in his 104 plate appearances in El Paso before being sent to Atlanta. That performance was enough for the Braves to give him a chance.
It is questionable as to whether or not another team will at this point. He has not had an extensive look with any of those three teams this year, but his ability has seemingly eroded. The lost year from his PED suspension in 2021 certainly did not help either.
But Cano still thinks he can help a team. Maybe this time that success from Triple-A can translate at the major league level and he can turn back the clock. However, it is far more like that, at 39 years old, his career has come to an end.
The Atlanta Braves have released Robinson Cano and he elected free agency. He is hoping for yet another chance to prove he has something left.
