Another day, another injury for Chris Sale. And this one will cause him to miss the rest of the 2022 season for the Boston Red Sox.

Chris Sale of the Boston Red Sox will miss the rest of the 2022 season after undergoing wrist surgery following a biking accident

The 33-year-old Sale has an extensive injury history with the Boston Red Sox, and the season-ending surgery on his right wrist following an accident on his bike just adds to that. He finishes the season having pitched just 5.2 innings in two games after battling a fractured finger following being hit by a comebacker in a game against the New York Yankees and a right rib stress fracture he suffered in the spring.

Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom tried to make light of the situation when speaking to reporters on Tuesday.

According to a statement, the Red Sox expect Sale to be ready for the start of 2023 spring training.

Sale reportedly had the bike accident while riding downhill away from a throwing session he had just had at Boston College. Reporters were told that Sale hit something on his ride, causing the accident and that the southpaw was “pretty beat up.”

Bloom told reporters that he thought Sale was likely going to pitch again this season, as he was mending from the broken finger on his pitching hand he suffered on July 17 in the Bronx. That, however, will now not be the case and the Red Sox will have to wait until 2023 to see exactly what a hopefully healthy Sale can bring to the rotation.

Sale is signed through the 2024 season on a five-year, $145 million deal. Since signing that deal before the pandemic-shortened season of 2020, Sale has pitched a total of 48.1 innings in 11 games.
