According to reports, the Chicago White Sox have lost shortstop Tim Anderson for an extended period of time with a torn ligament in his hand.

Chicago White Sox receive devastating news on All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson

Those reports estimate that the torn ligament in Anderson’s hand will cost him four to six weeks, meaning Anderson could be out until mid-September. It’s a tough blow for the Chicago White Sox, who enter Tuesday’s action at 55-53 and 2.0 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central as well as 2.5 games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.

Anderson has not played since August 6 when we went 0-for-4 against the Texas Rangers. That’s part of an August that has seen Anderson go 5-for-27 at the plate, including no hits in his last 13 at-bats with six strikeouts.

On Sunday, Anderson began serving a two-game suspension for contact with an umpire during a contest against the Oakland Athletics on July 29.

Despite the recent issues, Anderson has been a spark plug for the White Sox this season, earning his second consecutive All-Star Game appearance. He’s currently slashing .301/.339/.395 with six home runs, 25 RBI, and 13 stolen bases. His .301 average is the highest on the White Sox, just ahead of Jose Abreu’s .300 heading into Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

Anderson has posted 1.3 bWAR this season, but the White Sox as a combined unit have just 0.1 bWAR at the shortstop position. Aside from Anderson, three players have taken at-bats while playing shortstop this season, Danny Mendick (83 at-bats), Leury Garcia (41 at-bats), and Josh Harrison (one at-bat). Mendick, however, is currently on the 60-game injured list (and done for the season) after tearing his ACL in late June, so Garcia may be asked to step up at the position in Anderson’s absence.

Losing Tim Anderson is a big blow for the Chicago White Sox. Can the franchise keep their hopes of repeating as AL Central champs alive without him in the lineup? It’s something to watch as the regular season winds down.
