Sometimes, a player and a fan base just connect right off the bat. Such as been the case with the New York Mets and Daniel Vogelbach.

It helps that Vogelbach looks as though he would be more at home in a beer league softball game than a major league diamond. It also helps that he does not take himself seriously at all, talking about his love of donuts or stepping to the plate to ‘Milkshake’ on Wednesday, saying that “all the boys wanted him to do it” and what “the boys want, the boys get.”

Daniel Vogelbach becoming New York Mets cult hero

Vogelbach has been more than just his everyman look or ability to make fun of himself. He has also been a key part of the Mets’ lineup, notching 15 hits, including four doubles and a pair of homers, while driving in ten runs. While he had a solid 115 OPS+ for the Pirates, Vogelbach has taken his bat to another level during his time in New York.

That almost did not happen either. The Mets had regarded Vogelbach as an upgrade over what they already had on the roster as a designated hitter, but they were reportedly looking for even more. Another upgrade, this time over Vogelbach, was something that the Mets were considering.

In the end, that deal never materialized. It also helped that Vogelbach hit the ground running and has not slowed up. His bat has been white hot, helping the Mets to the second best record in the majors. Maybe, just maybe, they can catch the Dodgers and take that top spot.

If that happens, Vogelbach will likely be a key part of that. Whether he is getting clutch hits, somehow getting around the bases faster than anyone would imagine, or serving as an unofficial mascot, Vogelbach will just continue to endear himself even more to the fanbase. And, as he still has two years of team control left, that love affair could just be starting.

It has not taken long for Daniel Vogelbach to become a beloved figure for New York Mets fans. That love affair could keep right on going.
