Jasson Dominguez no longer untouchable for New York Yankees
Jasson Dominguez has been viewed as untouchable in trade discussions. As it turns out, the New York Yankees were willing to move him in the right deal.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Dominguez was part of the package that the Yankees offered to the Reds for Luis Castillo. While they refused to consider trading Anthony Volpe or Oswald Peraza, the Yankees’ willingness to discuss parting with Dominguez is a shift in mindset.
New York Yankees thoughts on Jasson Dominguez shifting?
Dominguez was considered the top prospect in the 2019-20 international signing period, his $5.4 million bonus the largest given out in that time frame. It was not a surprise that he earned such a high bonus; he had been compared to the likes of Mike Trout and Mickey Mantle as a five tool player after all.
The luster on Dominguez has faded a bit. After being a consensus top 100 prospect in 2020 and 2021, that was not the case heading into this year. He was no longer the Yankees top prospect, sliding down all the prospect lists and falling off of the Baseball Prospectus top 100 list entirely.
Meanwhile, Dominguez has had a strong season. The Yankees prospect has reached High-A ball for the first time and has performed well at that level despite being just 19 years old. He has posted a .268/.381/.440 batting line in his 407 combined plate appearances, hitting 11 homers and 18 doubles with 27 steals. There may be some concerns as he has struck out 108 times, but he has also drawn 60 walks thus far in 2022.
It is clear that he can be a key piece of the Yankees’ future and could even be that missing option in center by 2024. At the same time, the Yankees know that just reaching the postseason would not be enough this year. Fans were expecting a championship after their hot start, and the front office’s willingness to include Dominguez in a trade for Castillo shows a level of aggressiveness that had not been there in the past.
That willingness to include Dominguez may also show a bit of a shift in how the Yankees regard their top outfield prospect. Volpe and Peraza may still be untouchable, but that does not extend to Dominguez any longer.
The New York Yankees were reportedly willing to part with Jasson Dominguez in a trade for Luis Castillo. He is no longer an untouchable prospect.
