4) The Boston Red Sox

Like the Braves, the Red Sox have a good shortstop in Xander Bogaerts … but he could be a free agent at the end of the season. Bogaerts can opt-out of the rest of his three-year, $60 million contract after this season, and considering that he called out the club’s front office after their poor trade deadline showing, Bogaerts will almost certainly opt-out.

In theory, if Red Sox don’t re-sign Bogaerts, they could move Trevor Story (who played shortstop exclusively for the Rockies from 2016 through 2021) back to shortstop but he has been one of the best defenders in baseball at second base so they may not want to move him.

Correa also has an obvious connection with the team in Red Sox manager Alex Cora. He was Houston’s bench coach in 2017, when they won the World Series and Correa was the club’s shortstop.

5) The Miami Marlins

The Marlins are not in contention right now but Carlos Correa could be the offensive force that the club needs to get there.

On the pitching front, Sandy Alcantara has been the best starter in the NL this year. He’s leading the league in ERA, starts, innings, complete games, shutouts, and ERA+. Pablo López has had a great season too.

However, offensively, their team has an OPS+ of 92, which is 24th in baseball. Their shortstops have a wRC+ of 79, which is 25th in baseball so they are a team that could use an upgrade there. Their primary shortstop Miguel Rojas could slide into more of a backup role, which is more suitable for him right now.

Correa is also from Puerto Rico and was committed to go to the University of Miami before signing with the Astros in the draft so he could connect with the city and draw fans out to loanDepot Park.
