The Texas Rangers are looking to emerge from their rebuilding process. Their activity during the offseason, and impressive spending spree, were not going to be enough to patch all of their holes, but progress was expected. Instead, the Rangers are still languishing under .500 and have not been even been on the periphery of a playoff berth.

Those struggles came home to roost on Monday. The Rangers have fired manager Chris Woodward after four years, with third base coach Tony Beasley taking over in an interim role.

Change was needed on Texas Rangers bench

In Woodward’s defense, the Rangers had improved this season. Their .447 winning percentage is their best since 2019, and the first time in three years that they have won at least 40% of their games. However, the Rangers are still on pace for a 90 loss season, something that was not expected after those moves.

At the same time, Woodward had not exactly done much to remain at the helm. He had a 211-287 record as the Rangers’ manager, with his best season coming back in 2019. Even that year was a fluke as the Rangers were outscored by 68 runs and finished three games better than their Pythagorean record.

Meanwhile, Beasley is going to get his chance. He is considered akin to Ron Washington – a positive being with an infectious personality, someone who could help mold a relatively young team that is still in the latter stages of their rebuilding process. As Beasley has been with the Rangers since 2015, he is a familiar face and someone who deserves the chance.

At this point, Beasley has the rest of the season to audition for a permanent role. He is the type of manager that the Rangers could respond to, and should they go on a bit of a run, he could have the interim tag removed. But it will come down to these final few weeks.

The Texas Rangers have moved on from Chris Woodward. It was a move that, while surprising, needed to be made as the Rangers had not progressed.
