There has been some speculation as to when the New York Mets would promote some of their top prospects. The likes of Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Mark Vientos are all on the cusp of the majors and could get a look in the coming weeks. It is a matter of finding that opportunity for it to happen.

Such an opportunity appeared to be there for the taking. The Mets had placed Luis Guillorme on the Injured List, opening a spot on the roster for an infielder. That led to the hope that either Baty or Vientos would be promoted to the majors and make their debut.

Instead, the Mets brought journeyman Deven Marrero to the majors. As Anthony DiComo from MLB.com tweeted out, manager Buck Showalter stated that neither Baty nor Vientos were considered options to be brought to the majors at this time.

As disappointing as they may have been to the fanbase, it actually makes sense. Marrero is capable of playing in the middle of the infield, something that neither Baty nor Vientos can do. Adding either of those prospects to the roster would have hindered the Mets’ defensive versatility, something that will be important with Guillorme sidelined.

At the same time, the fans do have a point. Marrero does not have anything close to the offensive upside of either prospect, having produced a meager 41 OPS+ with six homers and ten doubles in his 367 plate appearances. He has a spot on the Mets’ roster right now entirely because of his defense.

This does not mean that either prospect will not appear in the majors at some point in 2022. Should a corner infielder land on the IL, such as Eduardo Escobar, then it would make sense that one of those prospects gets the call. Until then, they will remain in Triple-A, waiting for the right time before their major league careers begin.

The New York Mets top prospects will eventually find their way to the majors. It simply is not the right time for that promotion to happen.
