There was a time when Dellin Betances was one of the more formidable relievers in the game. A crucial part of the New York Yankees bullpen, he had been a dominant force until injuries ruined his 2019 campaign. A shoulder impingement sidelined him for most of that season as he faced a grand total of two batters before a partially torn Achilles ended his season.

Betances had attempted to return but was not the same. His two years with the Mets were a disaster as he was ineffective when he could take the mound. He also made just one appearance in 2021 as injuries also wiped that season out. It was not a surprise that could only garner a minor league deal with the Dodgers in the hopes that he had something left.

Injuries finally too much for former New York Yankees All Star Dellin Betances

As it turned out, Betances was done. He allowed 20 runs, 19 earned, in his 16.2 innings between Rookie Ball and Triple-A. Although he struck out 19 batters, he simply could not command his arsenal any longer as he issued 14 walks, hit five batters, and uncorked four wild pitches. The Dodgers released him on Wednesday as he was not going to be a part of their bullpen plans.

Betances released the same thing. After being released, he announced his retirement as he could never return to the form he showed while a member of the Yankees.

He was absolutely dominant during that time. A four time All Star, Betances had a 2.36 ERA and a 1.043 WHiP in his 381.2 innings with the Yankees, striking out 621 batters with 170 walks. Although he never became the heir to Mariano Rivera, he was still an excellent reliever in his own right.

Unfortunately, those injury woes cut into Betances’ career. He had still been in the midst of his prime when his shoulder issues started, but was unable to overcome those problems to have the type of second half to his career that he would have expected. Now, at 34 years old, and just a few short years after being one of the dominant relievers in the game, his career has come to an end.
