The Los Angeles Angels are doing one thing right by Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani had been vocal about his desire to be part of Team Japan in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. He had missed the 2017 tournament due to a right ankle injury and the pandemic shut down the next time it had been scheduled. Now that the WBC is back, Ohtani wanted in.

One of those hurdles is now out of the way. According to Kyoto News, the Angels have given Ohtani permission to play for Team Japan in the WBC. Now it is a matter of their National Team formally extending the invitation.

That just seems like it will be a matter of time. He is one of the best players in baseball, a power and speed threat in the lineup while performing at an ace level while on the mound. Any team would want either player on their roster for the WBC. Team Japan would get both for the price of one.

While Ohtani has not replicated his impressive 2021 at the plate, he is still having an excellent season. He has posted a 144 OPS+ with 27 homers and 11 steals in his 495 plate appearances entering Saturday. Meanwhile, he has posted a 2.69 ERA and a 1.060 WHiP in 117 innings on the mound, striking out 165 batters with just 28 walks. Ohtani is a force of nature unto himself.

Although it is unlikely that he will see the postseason at any point with the Angels, he will get a chance to play upon one of the biggest stages in baseball. The WBC matters to the players, with the ability to participate against the best in the world considered an honor. It is one that Ohtani will finally receive.

The Los Angeles Angels are allowing Shohei Ohtani to participate in the World Baseball Classic. Now Team Japan just needs to extend the offer.
