It has been a tumultuous year and a half for Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna.

First Ozuna had been a victim of domestic violence. Then, he was arrested for assault and battery against his wife in a separate incident, leading to a lengthy absence while on administrative leave and, eventually, a retroactive suspension. Early on Friday, Ozuna was arrested for DUI, yet another mark against the Braves’ outfielder.

Marcell Ozuna not doing himself any favors with Atlanta Braves

Somehow, Ozuna has managed to make these situations worse. Video from Ozuna being pulled over was made public, showing the outfielder handing his driver’s license and MLB ID card to the officer as he said “I’m Ozuna from the Braves.” Yes, Ozuna attempted to big time his way out of jail.

This leaves the Braves in a difficult situation. Ozuna still has another $33 million due on the four year, $65 million contract he had signed after a stellar 2020 campaign. However, he has been a disaster since the start of the 2021 season when he has been on the diamond, posting a .214/.271/.381 batting line with 27 homers and 20 doubles over his 656 plate appearances.

Ozuna has also seen his playing time disappear. He had not played since August 14 as Robbie Grossman and Eddie Rosario are seeing more playing time in left. It would be difficult to justify putting Ozuna as the designated hitter as that would, by definition, mean that he can actually hit.

At this point, it seems clear that the Braves would love to move on from Ozuna. Yes, $33 million is a steep cost to pay someone to not play for the team. However, in this case, it could be a matter of addition by subtraction considering that Ozuna is essentially a highly paid distraction who is not producing. In fact, one could easily argue that they should have moved on last offseason.

Somehow, Marcell Ozuna made himself look even worse in his arrest video. The Atlanta Braves need to move on from the disappointing outfielder.
