The Philadelphia Phillies bullpen woes have found a new way to rear their head.

This time, it is in the form of injuries. Corey Knebel, who had already been on the Injured List, has been lost for the rest of the season due to a torn right shoulder capsule. While he is undergoing stem cell treatment in an attempt to avoid surgery, but that is not guaranteed. Meanwhile, the Phillies’ current closer, Seranthony Dominguez, is heading to the IL as well due to his sore triceps and is without a timeframe to return.

Philadelphia Phillies get horrible bullpen news at bad time

On the plus side, the Phillies do have options for the ninth inning. David Robertson, who had been acquired at the trade deadline, can take over the role until Dominguez is able to return. Brad Hand has closing experience as well, giving the Phillies depth that they typically have not had for the closer role.

However, losing both pitchers is a tough blow. After years of struggles, and a constant conveyor belt of options as they sought to find anything that could actually find relief, the Phillies had put together a competent bullpen. That strong relief corps was a key to their success this season and ability to pull themselves into a playoff berth.

Now their depth is going to be tested. While the Phillies have better options than they had in years past, they will need those arms to step up into roles they may not be comfortable in just yet. As the Phillies are looking to solidify their place in the postseason, these losses could make a major difference.
