New York Yankees expect Giancarlo Stanton back on Thursday

The New York Yankees lineup should get a significant boost on Thursday.

According to Marly Rivera of ESPN, the Yankees are expecting to get Giancarlo Stanton back in the coming days. Manager Aaron Boone said that the plan is for Stanton to be activated on Thursday and slot right back into the lineup.

The Yankees’ offense has not been the same since Stanton was placed on the Injured List. Due to injuries and a lack of performance, the lineup has essentially been the Aaron Judge Show for the past month. Predictably, the Yankees have slipped in the standings and no longer hold the best record in the American League.

Stanton would certainly provide a significant boost to the lineup. He had produced a .228/.309/.498 batting line with 24 homers in his 328 plate appearances before landing on the IL. His 128 OPS+ is third on the team and he trails only Judge and Anthony Rizzo in homers.

He has not exactly lit the minor leagues on fire at this point in his rehab process. Stanton has struck out three times without recording a hit in his seven at bats. However, his rehab assignment is more about regaining his timing at the plate and feeling comfortable in the box than results.

In the end, what will be important is that Stanton is healthy and ready for the postseason. That is essentially going to be the point of the final few weeks for Stanton – to get himself back on track and ready to contribute in October. The Yankees are certainly going to need his power bat to be back to form at that point.
