Cade Cavalli getting the call from Washington Nationals

It was a matter of time before Cade Cavalli made his debut with the Washington Nationals. That time is going to be sooner than one may have expected.

According to Grant Paulsen, Cavalli is getting the call and will make his major league debut on Friday. The Nationals are also sending Cavalli to the mound against the Reds, giving him what should be a relatively easy opponent for his first outing.

There had been rumblings over the past few days that Cavalli would get the call. Such a move made sense in theory; he is a key part of their future and getting him a look over the final few weeks would only benefit both the Nationals and their prized pitching prospect.

At this point, Cavalli has proven everything he could at Triple-A. While there may be some questions about his command, there is no questioning his results. He has posted a 3.71 ERA and a 1.175 WHiP over his 97 innings, striking out 104 batters with 39 walks. Even more impressively, Cavalli has allowed just three homers this season.

Cavalli also has the type of arsenal that could make an impact. He has three plus, or better, pitches – a high octane fastball that can reach triple digits, a slider that can be manipulated into an offering with cutting action, and a curve. His fourth offering, a solid changeup, also has the potential to be a plus pitch.

Minor league success does not necessitate that will be the same in the majors. All the stuff in the world does not matter if it cannot be harnessed. However, there is plenty of reason for the Nationals to hope that Cavalli can be a building block, a young top of the rotation arm that they need as they look ahead to the future. His journey will begin on Friday.
