The Miami Marlins had a plan last offseason. They knew they had to improve their lineup, and at the same time, they had plenty of pitching that they could trade. While they did add players in an attempt to improve their offensive capabilities, most of those changes came in free agency. Only one deal, where Zach Thompson was included in the Jacob Stallings trade, involved moving an arm to land an offensive upgrade.

As 2022 draws to a close, the Marlins are right back where they were heading into the offseason. Once again, they desperately need to upgrade their lineup. And once again, they are looking to trade some of their pitching to do just that.

Miami Marlins hoping for different outcome this offseason

There are some pieces to build around in the lineup. Jazz Chisholm appeared to be in the midst of a breakout season before back issues ended his 2022 campaign. JJ Bleday and Peyton Burdick could be answers to what has been a disappointing outfield. However, their top prospects outside of the rotation are still years away.

Those prized additions did not pan out either. Jorge Soler has just 13 homers and a 95 OPS+ as he was predictably unable to replicate his strong showing in Atlanta. Avisail Garcia has been even worse, with just seven homers and a 67 OPS+. Stallings, while more known for his glove, has been a disappointment as well, with just three homers and a 63 OPS+.

It will clearly take more than a bat or two to fix the Marlins’ offensive woes. And they would likely want to find a way to move on from the Soler and/or Garcia contracts as well. If they can find a way to do that and upgrade the lineup, so much the better.

Teams are going to be looking for pitching this offseason. Other teams are going to continue to sell and the Marlins do have several attractive pitching prospects to choose from. And with a normal offseason, maybe those deals can happen this time. Otherwise, the 2023-24 offseason could be more of the same once again.
