It is certainly not out of the realm of possibility to think that two of the biggest names in the St. Louis Cardinals lineup could each reach home run milestones on the same night as the 2022 regular season winds down.

Could St. Louis Cardinals sluggers Nolan Arenado and Albert Pujols each make home run history on the same night?

It’s certainly well known that Albert Pujols is closing in on his 700th career regular-season home run, entering Tuesday night’s game at Cincinnati with 694 homers. That’s just two behind Alex Rodriguez (696), who sits in fourth place on the MLB career home run leaderboard. Ahead of him are the only three players in MLB history to hit 700 or more home runs: Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755), and Barry Bonds (762).

Pujols has hit eight home runs in August, including number 694 against the Reds on Monday night. He has now hit home runs off 450 different MLB pitchers.

However, his St. Louis Cardinals teammate, Nolan Arenado, is approaching a home run milestone of his own. Arenado goes into Tuesday’s action with 296 career homers, including 27 this season and eight in August as well. When Arenado hits his 300th, he will tie Chuck Klein on the all-time MLB home run list and become the 154th player to have more than 300 homers during his career.

Could the duo hit their milestones in the same game? It’s possible, especially with the Cardinals have 33 regular-season games remaining and Pujols likely to get as many at-bats as he can with his retirement looming after this season concludes.

Of those 33 games left in the 2022 season, 17 of those will happen at Busch Stadium, meaning the milestones could potentially also happen in front of the Cardinals faithful.

Yes, there is plenty of attention being paid to the pursuit of 700 home runs by Pujols (and deservedly so), but don’t overlook the potential for a pair of Cardinals to make history on the same day.
