If Scott Boras is correct, former New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto should be signing on the dotted line any second now.
After all, he had claimed that Conforto would be signed by the end of the 2022 campaign. While that could technically mean that he signs on the last day of the season, the premise behind such a claim was that he would ink a deal with a contending team and look to be a factor in the postseason.
Is former New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto signing or not?
If that is going to happen, it needs to be within the next few hours. As Andy Martino at SNY pointed out, Conforto needs to sign before the end of the day today in order to be eligible for the postseason. Tick tock.
In theory, Conforto would be an asset to a team eyeing a postseason spot. He is a lifetime 124 OPS+ with 132 homers and 141 doubles over his 2980 plate appearances. If his shoulder is healthy, and he is capable of swinging a bat and playing in the outfield, he would be a significant addition. But that depends on whether or not he is actually healthy, which Boras has not exactly been forthcoming about over the past few months.
The Mets could actually use Conforto if he is healthy. They need outfield depth, a left handed bat off the bench, and another option at the designated hitter spot. However, that would be a major blow for Boras if Conforto returned to the Mets after he rejected an extension offer and refused the Qualifying Offer in search of a better deal that never materialized.
The clock is ticking. The hours, minutes, and seconds are slipping away. And despite all those assurances and promises, Conforto remains in free agency, a gigantic question mark that could help, but may not be healthy. Time for Boras to put up or shut up.
