As the World Baseball Classic gets closer, teams are starting to finalize their rosters. Team Italy is amongst those teams putting their roster together.

Manager Mike Piazza joined MLB Network for an interview on Wednesday. During that interview, he revealed that three players – Trey Mancini, Jordan Romano, and David Fletcher – will be part of the roster going forward.

While it is just three players, it is a good start to filling out the roster. Mancini has been a solid power bat throughout his career and is on pace for his fifth consecutive 20+ home run season. Not only does he provide Team Italy with a middle of the order bat, his ability to play at first and both corner outfield spots provides plenty of versatility.

Fletcher may not have the same offensive capabilities but he is another solid piece. He has an ability to work a count and make contact, two necessary components for a top of the lineup bat. He also has some defensive versatility as he has moved between second and short for the Angels.

Romano gives the roster a proven closer for any possible wins in the tournament. He has emerged as one of the best relievers in the game, posting a 2.04 ERA and a 1.016 WHiP over his 128 innings, notching 53 saves while striking out 160 batters with 47 walks. He provides a shutdown option for a bullpen that may need some help.

Team Italy is not viewed as one of the favorites for the tournament. They simply do not have the same star power as other teams and could be fighting an uphill battle to advance beyond the first round. However, with this trio, they do have a solid beginning for their roster.
