Texas Rangers move on from Dallas Keuchel
Add the Texas Rangers to the list of former teams for Dallas Keuchel.
The former All Star has been designated for assignment after continuing to struggle in Texas. In his place, the Rangers have promoted John King from Triple-A.
Dallas Keuchel only got worse with Texas Rangers
The Rangers had been Keuchel’s third major league team this year. He initially began the season with the White Sox before being released at the end of May after posting a 7.88 ERA and a 2.156 WHiP over his 32 innings, striking out 20 batters with 20 walks.
It did not take long for Keuchel to get another opportunity as he signed with the Diamondbacks on June 7. However, he was even worse in Arizona, posting a 9.64 ERA and a 1.821 WHiP over his 18.2 innings. His strikeout to walk rate was respectable, as he struck out 18 batters with just seven walks, but he continued to get hit hard before being let go on July 22.
Once again, he was not out of work long. Keuchel signed with the Rangers on July 26, agreeing to a minor league deal. After a solid showing in Triple-A, he was given another chance in the majors, only to allow 14 runs on 18 hits and four walks over ten innings.
It is possible that Keuchel will get another opportunity next season. Teams are desperate enough to find arms where anyone with a recent track record of success will get a look. And Keuchel was solid during the 2020 season, giving a reason for teams to hope that he can rebound once more.
However, those days are starting to fade into the past. Keuchel will be 35 years old at the start of the 2023 campaign and his low strikeout, ground ball approach could eventually lead to struggles. That has been the case over the past two seasons, making it fair to wonder how much he has left to offer.
The Texas Rangers are the latest team to walk away from Dallas Keuchel. It is fair to wonder what, if anything, he has left in the tank.
