Arizona Diamondbacks outfield surplus can help rebuild
By David Hill
The Arizona Diamondbacks are in an enviable spot for potential trades.
Teams around the league are looking for help in the outfield. While there will be some help available in free agency, those cost controlled long term assets are far more desirable. This way, any available funds can be focused elsewhere, or a possible bargain of an extension can come together.
Arizona Diamondbacks could fuel rebuild with young outfielders
Enter the Diamondbacks. They have several young outfielders with multiple years of team control, with prospects just getting their feet wet in the majors. That surplus had led to the speculation that the Diamondbacks could move at least one of those outfielders.
It also helps that the Diamondbacks have found an outfielder in an expected area. Daulton Varsho had been a catcher for most of his professional career before he began to transition to the outfield to minimize the wear and tear on his knees. It is a transition that has gone better than anyone could have imagined as Varsho’s days behind the plate could be coming to an end.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks have plenty of other options that could be available. Corbin Carroll would seemingly be a player that the Diamondbacks would look to keep around as a current top prospect. However, another top prospect in Alek Thomas or the surprising Jake McCarthy could find themselves on the trade block. The same could be said for Stone Garrett as well.
This puts the Diamondbacks in an excellent spot this offseason. They need arms, and a team such as the Marlins, who are looking to improve their outfield, could be a perfect trade partner. But it is a matter of getting a deal to come together.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have plenty of young outfielders. That logjam on their roster could help accelerate their rebuilding process.
