Derek Jeter comments lead to New York Yankees speculation
Derek Jeter certainly made his return to the Bronx interesting.
Honored by the New York Yankees prior to Friday’s game, Jeter raised eyebrows when he said that he knew he had not been around for the past few years. However, he also stated that he “really truly do(es) look forward to hopefully seeing a lot more of you here in the near future.”
Derek Jeter shoots down his own New York Yankees rumors – maybe
For his part, Jeter shot any speculation down. When Andy Martino from SNY asked Jeter if his comments indicated that a specific opportunity was discussed, Jeter said that he was reading too much into that statement. Martino also noted that another source had said that there were not any plans underway to hire him for a role in the baseball ops department.
This may be a time when the wording of those comments matters. Jeter did say that a specific opportunity had not been discussed. At the same time, it is noted that, at this moment, there are not any plans to bring Jeter in as a member of the baseball ops department.
But that does not necessarily mean anything. It is possible that there have been discussions regarding Jeter’s return to the organization, although an official capacity has not been determined. With that being the case, there would not be any plans to bring him in to the baseball ops department, or a specific role, because talks have not gotten that far.
It may simply be a matter of time and a matter of finding the right fit. Jeter clearly had ideas when he was with the Marlins, leaving because his voice was no longer being heard or listened to. It would not be a surprise to see him in a similar capacity with the Yankees.
Derek Jeter may say that there are not any specific opportunities for him to return to the New York Yankees. But that does not mean it will not happen.
