The nadir for Aaron Hicks and the New York Yankees may have come on Friday night.

Hicks dropped a fly ball in left in the top of the fourth inning, ranging towards the line in an attempt to get the out. After dropping the ball, he stood in disappointment, not realizing that the ball was actually fair. A pair of runners scored as the Rays extended their lead at the time to 3-0.

New York Yankees need to move on from Aaron Hicks

He was not done making an impact for the Rays. Randy Arozarena followed with a fly ball to left that Hicks took a bad route on, the ball dropping behind Hicks on the warning track for another double and another run scored. Hicks was soundly booed, serenaded with chants of “Joey Gallo,” and had objects thrown onto the diamond before he was removed from the game in favor of Estevan Florial.

But there is plenty more where that came from. Hicks had signed a seven year, $70 million extension with the Yankees, of which there are another three years and $30.4 million left. He has been an abject disaster since singing that extension, unable to stay on the diamond and unable to produce when healthy. In that time, he has a disappointing .218/.333/.364 batting line in 995 plate appearances, hitting 28 homers and 30 doubles.

That contract was considered a bit of a gamble despite the relatively low cost. He was not exactly a bastion of health in his career. However, his first two seasons in the Bronx were excellent, making that contract worth the risk.

That low cost can also help the Yankees move on. Hicks has started to find himself in a Gallo-esque situation, where his poor performance is making an impact on every facet of his game. Being removed from the Yankees’ eventual 4-2 loss on Friday night, and all around struggles, just show that it is time to part ways.

Aaron Hicks is under contract for three more years at just over $30 million. That does not mean he should be on the New York Yankees for the remainder of that deal.
