Washington Nationals latest to walk away from Jake McGee
So much for the third time being the charm with Jake McGee and the Washington Nationals.
McGee had already been let go by the Giants and Brewers prior to signing in Washington. While he was not about to help the Nationals reach the postseason, a strong showing could be a springboard for a contract in 2023.
Jake McGee unable to hang on with Washington Nationals
That did not prove to be the case. McGee lasted for exactly a month in Washington before he was designated for assignment once again. This time his roster spot was taken by Israel Pineda.
McGee did not exactly do much to improve his stock heading into next season. He allowed seven runs on seven hits, including two homers, and five walks in his ten innings. While he did strike out ten batters, he did not appear as though he would be a viable option going forward.
As he turned 36 years old in August, it is fair to wonder how much McGee has left in the tank at this point. He has a 6.81 ERA and a 1.432 WHiP in his 37 innings between the Giants, Brewers, and Nationals, striking out 25 batters with 12 walks while allowing six homers. Opponents have posted a .810 OPS against McGee, the worst of his career that does not involve his time in the launching pad known as Colorado.
It is possible that he will generate some interest in the offseason. After all, he had a solid 2021 campaign and was a key contributor to the Giants’ unexpected success. But time awaits no man, and McGee is definitely on the wrong side of 30. His career could be coming to an end.
The Washington Nationals have designated Jake McGee for assignment. At this point, one has to wonder if he has anything left in the tank.
