Philadelphia Phillies eyeing major splash at shortstop
Shortstop has been one of the biggest weaknesses for the Philadelphia Phillies this season. That may not be the case in 2023.
It is anticipated that Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts will opt out of the remaining three years and $60 million on his current contract. Once that happens, the Phillies are expected to be one of his more ardent suitors in free agency.
Xander Bogaerts could be what Philadelphia Phillies need
There is already an opening at short. Primary shortstop Didi Gregorius was released on August 4 as he was unable to replicate his 2020 success in his following two seasons in Philadelphia. Bryson Stott has taken over in his stead, but has been generally subpar with the bat. He has also been better defensively at second, a position he could find himself at next season if Jean Segura’s $17 million option for 2023 is declined.
Considering Gregorius’ and Stott’s struggles with the bat, it is not a surprise that the Phillies have not had much production from the position. Phillies shortstops have combined for a .653 OPS which is simply not good enough.
Bogaerts would fix those issues. He has produced a .318/.384/.473 batting line in his 552 plate appearances this season, hitting 13 homers and 37 doubles. Not only would he add another dangerous bat to the Phillies’ lineup, but he would be a defensive upgrade as well. Bogaerts would be a perfect fit in Philadelphia.
However, the Phillies will have plenty of competition for his services. Not only is he going to be one of the best players on the market, but plenty of teams will be interested in his services. The Phillies have other holes to fill as well, especially in center. Nonetheless, this is one of those situations where it would make sense to open the checkbook and pay the man to come to Philly.
The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be one of Xander Bogaerts’ top suitors in free agency. He would fill what has been a void in their lineup.
